Alas, as Gorden Van Gelder would say
I am getting the house ready for friends to come over for what is going to be our last gaming session for, at least, awhile. We could game with one kid, and we could game with two kids, one of whom pretty much just needed to sleep or nurse. But now that we've got two who need attention and stimulation, the game just isn't working. I let our GM know that the Damsel and I had to drop out, and he was bummed, but seemed to understand that it was in no way a reflection on his game. We were having a great time in those moments when we weren't stressed about the Dude or the Bud. When they're older and can play by themselves a bit more, we'd like to play again.

Also have let my superhero game stutter and die, which bums me a little bit, but is only fair. It was started as a way to get the Damsel some with-friends socialization time post-baby-arrival, and given that she had to drop out to tend to the kids, it was turning into, well, not-fun-ness for the family.

Someday, there will be gaming again. For now, we will be good parents.

Bummer. Yeah, little kids need a lot of attention. The good part? The next year or two go quick.

I'm trying to remember what my parents' gaming history was like.

There are about two-and-a-half years between my sister and I, and I know they were gaming when she was just a baby (due to the oft-repeated baby-sister-got-stood-on-on-gaming-night story). So let's say I was somewhere between 3 and 4 when they started.

I started playing when I was 6, so there were two or three years in there where they were gaming with two kids who weren't. If they were playing at our place, no big deal - we could go to bed at bedtime. If they were playing elsewhere, we'd read, or colour, or keep ourselves otherwise amused - or sit up and listen to the game - until we got tired, at which point we could curl up behind a couch and go to sleep.

(I think, by the way, that this taught me a great life skill - going to sleep in a brightly lit room, full of people talking and laughing, meant that to this day, I can still pretty much sleep anywhere. My partner has trouble sleeping if there's a hint of sound, or if the Stand-By LED on the television is too bright.)

Now, I'm guessing most gaming groups wouldn't be as tolerant of a six-year-old player, but I'm personally eternally grateful to them for it!
