For Fuck's Sake, People (homophobia trigger warning)
OH RPG GAMING SITES NO!

Quote of note, in regards to Dragon Age: Origins having homosexual romance options:

"David Gaider must really get a kick out of writing homosexual relationships.

In any case, I'm not going to buy this game. I don't consider being flirted or stalked by fags as entertainment in the slightest sense. "

-- Surlent, a totally heterosexual dude who is not even a little curious about why it felt good when he played center in football and the quarterback didn't go in shotgun formation and cupped his taint, the quarterback's muscular fingers lightly brushing the tight surface of Surlent's uniform around the ass, just before shouting, "Hike!", and now he pays women to put on football helmets so he can achieve an erection.

Fortunately, others responded appropriately. I added a brief, "Methinks the homophobe doth protest too much," and the mods noted that the user had received a warning. Sounds like your basic "One asshole who gets kicked in the shins by the rest of the group" situation.

And then we got this in response (emphasis mine):

"Why would you warn Surlent? He just stated an opinion. Unless you warned all of the gay approvers too. That would be okay, I guess. I mean if you're going to warn everyone who is heterosexual and dislikes homosexuality, you'll be warning half the male population of this website. To me, calling someone a homophobe is as demeaning as calling someone a faggot. Since you allowed homophobe then faggot/fags should be allowed as well. You can't pick which group to be intolerant to. Please let me know if RPGWatch is going to take a stance against people who dislike homosexuals, because I would have to leave too."

-- crpgnut, who puts a smiley after correcting "homophobe" by saying "homonauseated would be closer" to show that he's just joshing around, lol, I hate gay people, roflqueers.

To me, calling someone violent is as demeaning as punching someone in the face! To me, charging someone with manslaughter is as demeaning as committing a murder! To me, being called a racist is as demeaning as using the n-wo... Oh, wait, stupid straight white people whine about that, too.

Every time I wonder why it's so damn hard to get a gay-friendly plot or character into a game, I just have to look to the Internets for an answer.

omg, is he like totally suggesting that David Gaider might be like pro-gay? That's like totally the same thing as being a queer, lol.

Oh, wait.

Losers.

Breathe, Patrick, breathe. Welcome to The Gay Wardens (http://social.bioware.com/group/135/) group in the Bioware Social Network. A virtual paradise for all GLBT (and friendly) RPG gamers who are very much looking forward to all the romances available in current and future Bioware games. So far there's been zero bashing and a good amount of constructive conversations. My point is, there are nice and open-minded people out there as well, so don't let the bad apples get to you.

I want to join the Gay Wardens! I just need the social site to let me on; I've forgotten the password and it won't help me find it again.

I was very excited by the fact that I as a female could romance another woman in ME and to be fair I think the guys should have that chance too.
Three cheers for diversity!
Sexuality in general is a touchy point and some people simply can't get their heads around it and as such they react badly. Even so, there are a lot of people who appreciate the diversity of being able to romance the same sex in games. And personally I believe it adds to demolishing the walls of drama surrounding this particular issue.

Wow. That's lame. =/

I mean, I myself don't normally do the same-sex stuff if it's an option (mostly because the characters who are available don't interest me. Like Liara, for example) but sheesh. It's not like anyone is forcing someone to play ANY of the romance plots, opposite sex or same.

I just don't get people sometimes.

Heh. Yeah, when somebody freaks out about a gay romance *option* my immediate assumption is that it's because they're afraid if how it would make them feel if they actually played through it.

The more guys start to accept that it's OK to, you know, go to bed with the *guy* with the helmet on, the happier the world will be.

I'm assuming he doesn't have a problem with a lesbian romance option. Teh gay male terror usually subsides when there's at least one vagina involved.

Are you suggesting that this Surlent might actually be homosexual himself, without realizing it, and tries to compress his hidden feelings by pretending to be super-hardcore manly? Clever! That's what I think about most homophobes, actually.

But don't get so angry about such people! That's just wasted energy. Just let them stay that way. As long as they're not poking people's eyes out with their ignorance, I don't see the problem. Besides, try to see the positive aspect of this. People like him are always there for a good laugh. At least that's how I see it.

How dare a virtual character (who would produce similar gametes to myself in the real world, should they have ever existed in the real world,) express interest in my virtual character of similar gametes! How dare they think my character is hot and awesome!

How dare their flattering attentions be optional and player-pursued!

(And what is this homo ROMANCE SUBSTANCE STUFF anyway? WHERE ARE MY BAR WENCHES?

...I bet TEH HOMOS lit them all on fire just so they would be the only option left for me my character! OH WHAT PERVERTED LENGTHS WILL THEY NOT GO TO PURSUE ME MY CHARACTER?)

INCONVENIENCE! DISCOMFORT!

I'm a MAN!

- Capsrant aside, the hyper-defensiveness is both fascinating and baffling. Then again, I'm still trying to figure out why some Joes refuse to play as female characters because it makes them feel "gay." Unless said female character is hyper sexualized beyond reason, that is. And can get it on with another female. Gee, I'm sure glad my gender has found its use in making Joe feel appropriately masculine!

As a straight woman I'm more interested in straight options, but I don't mind trying out other romances if it fits the persona of my character. I love experiencing as much substance as possible. Especially when said romances are worked on with the love and attention of, say, BioWare.

I shouldn't be surprised by threads like that, but for some reason I am. The level of ignorance is amazing. Someone basically says "I won't buy this game because I don't like fags" and other people are mystified as to why the statement is offensive.

BTW, I never realized the part about the story line in Jade Empire. Loved that game.

Just when you think you've got no faith in humanity left to lose...

That's why it's so important to keep introducing LGBT-friendly stuff to games. Can't let the idiots with no grasp of what is truly offensive win.

It's times like this I feel like whipping out the "Help, We're Being Oppressed!" piechart. Different topic, same percentiles.

Ignorance on the Internetz?!?! Never....

Myself, I had to laugh at this:

"Anybody who ACCIDENTALLY ran into the gay Sky romance probably ACCIDENTALLY finds himself at truck stops late at night wearing assless chaps as well."

...as for the "I'm not going to buy a game with homosexuality romance options in it" crowd, I'd suggest they stop buying food, clothing, cars, and a host of other commodities as there is a good chance that people from that community had a hand in those products, as well.

It's always a bit depressing to find this sort of thing, but on the bright side, I think we have come a long way and Bioware are doing great things in this direction! So thank you!

Hopefully, the more standard it becomes to have gay characters in games, the more people will learn to just accept it and move on. It doesn't have to be in your face, just optional. We'll know where to look. :)

There was a problem with having an *option*? I play straight and the idea makes me queazy if it's written wrong, but there should be the option for others. It's not like we're all the same and fit into the same box.

Yeah, I never got the whole football thing and masculinity... or sports in general... balls, balls everywhere...

Screw the internets! I was very happy to hear that Bioware is doing a male-male romance option for Dragon Age.
